In shortDesigner 张煜 explains how her painting series "Mother's Room" became SELFRELIANT's SS27 collection "PARADOX", turning canvas themes of confinement and fragility into wearable sculptures.

The Painter's Garment

Before I was a fashion designer, I was a painter. My art series, "Mother's Room," explored themes of confinement and finding strength within fragility. When I created SELFRELIANT's SS27 collection, "PARADOX," I wasn't just designing clothes; I was translating those canvas narratives into wearable sculptures.

The main look—a rigid, hand-embroidered gold corset anchored by flowing black tulle—represents the "armor" women wear to protect their inner softness. As a former Miss World finalist, I intimately understand how a woman's body occupies space and commands a stage. As a designer, I wanted to merge that physical power with artistic vulnerability.

"PARADOX" is about the beautiful tension between being grounded and being ethereal. It is a celebration of the modern woman's dual nature: fiercely protective and endlessly fluid. This shoot is a visual poem about the strength found in embracing our own contradictions.
