An interview with Alexandre Gonthier Engracio, founder of the Maison GONTHIER PARIS.
In a world where emerging brands often seek to stand out, GONTHIER PARIS cultivates a more personal approach to luxury. Born from a family story, the young Parisian leather goods Maison draws inspiration from memories, an aesthetic sensibility and a deep attachment to French elegance. Its founder, Alexandre, shares the origins of the project and his vision of a luxury that is contemporary, understated and distinctive.
GONTHIER PARIS began with a deeply personal story. Could you tell us about it?
It all began with handbag sketches drawn by my wife, which we had kept over the years. They were there, almost forgotten, yet they already expressed a particular vision of elegance. One day, the idea of bringing them to life emerged quite naturally. What started as a personal wish gradually became the project of building a Maison. I believe the most beautiful ventures sometimes begin with very simple things to which we attach special meaning.
What inspired you to enter the demanding world of luxury leather goods?
Above all, the desire to create something that reflects who we are. I did not want to reproduce the codes of an established heritage house or follow a trend. I wanted to build a world with its own identity: restrained, yet full of character. Luxury, as I see it, is not simply about a name or a price. It lies in the emotion an object inspires, the quality of its craftsmanship and the pleasure of keeping it over time.
Your first handbag, L Y S É A, embodies this vision. What kind of woman did you have in mind when imagining it?
A free, independent woman who knows her own taste and does not need to make a grand statement to express her personality. L Y S É A was conceived to complement that sense of style. Its silhouette is confident, yet it retains a certain softness. I like the idea that a handbag can be instantly recognisable without trying too hard to attract attention. To me, true elegance often lies in that balance.
